Mahale Mountains Wildlife

We’ve never heard of someone going on safari at Mahale Mountains without seeing chimps. But at certain times of the year, it can be more work to see them. Depending on when you go, you may have to trek between an hour and the better portion of a day.

It’s easier to see chimps later in the season as they make their way down the mountains to search for food. So, if you’re not really after a strenuous adventure, plan your trip between August and October. This is the best and easiest time to see chimpanzees on a Mahale Mountain safari.

Just keep in mind that these are wild animals, so no one can make any promises on how far you’ll have to walk before you see chimps.

In addition to the large chimpanzee population, the Mahale Mountains are home to many other primates, birds, hippos and crocodiles. You may even see a leopard, if you’re very lucky.

The park is home to 355 species of birds, 82 species of mammals, and 9 species of primates, including the largest chimp population in the world. If you’re dying to see chimpanzees on your safari, Mahale Mountains State Park is where you must go.

When to Go to the Mahale Mountains

The dry season here is long and lasts from July through late October. You can see chimps any time of year, but the dry season is best. It also offers better weather for trekking through mountains in search of chimpanzees. So, the dry season is your best bet.

Although remote, the Mahale Mountain National Park is an absolutely beautiful location. In addition to experiencing the wildlife, there are other things you may want to do while you’re here. Stroll down Tanganyika Lake’s shoreline, kayak or fish on the lake. Or you can explore the forest and climb narrow trails to uncover hidden waterfalls.
