Splendors Of The Serengeti

Serengeti National Park, Northern Tanzania, East Africa

Plan your Serengeti safari during the Great Migration, and you’re in for a heart-racing treat. During this time every year, two million wildebeests along with hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras cross the Serengeti in search of pasture and water. You can bet that their predators aren’t far behind.

And you could be right there to witness and photograph this annual event in all its splendor. Talk about a bucket list adventure!

Serengeti Safari: Wildlife

The annual migration that takes place here happens to be the largest unaltered animal migration in the world. And as you might guess, it’s something you have to see to really grasp its magnitude. Most people will never even see a wildebeest in their lifetime, and you can place yourself in the spot where more than 2 million wildebeests will travel at once. It’s remarkable, if you really stop to think about it.

The animals’ journey spans 1,000 km in a circular path that crosses Kenya and Tanzania. The migration takes place in a unique scenic setting of ‘endless plains’. That is, 25,000km of short grasslands dotted with rocky outcrops (kopjes) interspersed with rivers and woodlands. The Park also hosts one of the largest and most diverse large predator-prey interactions worldwide, providing a particularly impressive experience.

Serengeti National Park

The name Serengeti comes from the Masai word Siringitu, meaning endless plain. Located along the rift valley, the Serengeti abounds with geological formations.

One of Serengeti’s defining features is its Kopjes (pronounced copy), a feature of continual weathering. As top soil (made of rock and ash) has eroded, it has exposed layers of metamorphic rock. These round Kopjes appear as islands in a sea of grass.

The national park covers an area of 14800 square Kilometres. Most of the area is made up of grassy plains that are home to 3 million animals. These animals are thankful for the scattered kopjes that act as a safe haven from grass fires, predators and the heat.

Because it’s located northwest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Serengeti sits in the mountains’ rain shadow and thus receive less rainfall.

Although the Serengeti National Park is world famous for the annual migration that takes place here, this area offers plenty to see and experience in the off-seasons. The area is also well-known for its abundance of leopards, cheetahs, lions and other large cats.
